As an international student looking for work during lockdowns, Shreya’s path to employment was paved with obstacles and setbacks. Despite visa and COVID restrictions, her perseverance and work ethic has been recognised time and again since joining Sodexo, most recently in her promotion to Brand & Communications Coordinator.

Shreya had the right skills and attitude, but having come to Australia on a student visa for her Masters in Marketing and Business Information Systems, she could not work beyond a designated number of hours while completing her studies. Shreya went through a lengthy process with Sodexo to find the right role with flexibility.

It was challenging, but I was patient because I believed in the bigger picture,” Shreya said.

This, in addition to the first lockdown of the pandemic coinciding with her arrival in Australia, really tested Shreya’s resilience. However, recognising her obvious talent and dedication, Sodexo kept her in mind when a casual position at the Perth FM Command Centre became available that fit her visa requirements.

"I was excited to join Sodexo. I felt fortunate they remembered me and accommodated my working restrictions,” Shreya said.

I've worked quite passionately to prove myself as a resource, and as soon as I graduated, Sodexo offered me a full-time position.”

Shreya’s business acumen and commitment to supporting her team was quickly recognised in her full-time role. When an opportunity in the Sodexo Brand & Communications team opened up, Shreya was the most appropriate candidate to step into the newly created role.

“Sodexo recognised that I was a new graduate in a new area of knowledge, and found relevant opportunities for me to grow,” Shreya said.

"While it can be difficult to jump into a newly created role, I see it as an opportunity to use my skills to enhance the work of the team. I’m a fresh pair of eyes that can offer a new perspective on things, question certain processes and work with the team to find a new way of operating.”

Exposed to Sodexo through her partner who has been with the company for four years, Shreya knows the opportunities available to her and is excited to see where her journey takes her.

“There's huge scope of growth in Sodexo, particularly when you're contributing and making a positive impact,” Shreya said.

“I feel I'm upskilling myself every day because I'm being trained by my seniors and exposed to new systems.

My advice to anyone looking to join Sodexo or progress their career is to be patient. It takes time, but once you are ready to grow or progress, you will find the support here.

Sodexo values its employees. Be open with where you want to go, and they will help direct your progression.”
