ISO 45001 set to improve workplace safety

The new ISO 45001 certification is the world’s first International Standard for occupational health and safety. Set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and recently adopted by Australia, the standard aims to improve employee safety, minimise workplace risks, and create better, safer working conditions.

Facilities management (FM) company Sodexo Australia is among the first organisations to be accredited to the new standard.

Sodexo Australia Chief Financial Officer and Country President, Mark Chalmers, said

“This certification bolsters our position in the market as an industry leader and plays a vital role in demonstrating Sodexo’s ability to control processes and ensure services are delivered to our clients in a safe, sustainable and quality manner.”

It took auditors three weeks to complete the compressive audit across Sodexo’s sites, which include healthcare, corporate, education and mining facilities located throughout New South Wales and Western Australia.

During the process, Sodexo was also accredited to:

ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification
ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System certification
AS/NZS 4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System recertification.

In conjunction with the ISO 41000 series, which was developed specifically for facilities management, ISO 45001 will help establish minimum requirements and expectations for FM practice, and raise the industry's profile within the marketplace.
