Sodexo’s Commitment to Safety Honoured with AfMA Fleet Safety Award
Leading the Charge in Fleet Safety
Winning the AfMA Fleet Safety Award is a testament to the efforts of our dedicated teams and the bold steps taken to redefine what fleet safety can achieve. Our ability to operate safely across vast geographies and under challenging conditions speaks to the innovation and leadership that underpin our approach.
Scott Leahy, Sodexo’s Mass Transportation Manager, summarised it best, saying, “We knew early on that we didn’t just want to monitor risk — we wanted to prevent it. And that meant fundamentally changing how safety is understood and practised every day.”
This vision has driven extraordinary outcomes, both in terms of enhanced safety metrics and operational efficiency, culminating in industry-wide recognition.
Delivering Measurable Impact
A significant portion of this success stems from our operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region—a vast and remote area where safety is non-negotiable. Our fleet of over 400 vehicles travels more than 8.6 million kilometres each year, keeping thousands of mining workers on the move. The scale and intensity of this operation made it vital to implement state-of-the-art solutions to safeguard our teams on the road.
The results achieved speak volumes about the effectiveness of a data-driven safety culture. Since implementing key safety measures, we’ve seen remarkable progress in key metrics:
- Speeding Reduction: Instances of exceeding 105kph dropped by 67%, while extreme speeding over 120kph saw a 95% reduction.
- Seatbelt Compliance: Violations fell dramatically, with instances decreasing by 84%.
- Workload Regulation: Drivers exceeding the legal limit of 14 consecutive workdays reduced by 62%.
These statistics underscore the meaningful change driven by Scott Leahy and his talented teams.
A Culture of Safety and Leadership
This achievement would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of Scott Leahy. His dedication to rethinking fleet safety, building trust, and fostering a proactive mindset among teams has set Sodexo apart as a leader in the industry.
The award recognises more than just technology—it acknowledges the people behind the results. The men and women of Sodexo Transport have embraced new processes and systems with enthusiasm, proving that innovation is as much about people as it is about tools. Their commitment helps ensure that safety isn’t just a priority—it’s part of our DNA.
This recognition belongs to every team member who contributes to making Sodexo a safer and more reliable partner across Australia’s Energy and Resources sector.
We couldn’t be prouder of what’s been accomplished, and we are excited to continue raising the bar for fleet safety, innovation, and excellence.
