When it comes to waste, large organisations have a particularly vital role to play. With a supply chain of over 150,000 enterprises, 428,000 employees and 100 million daily consumers, Sodexo is a global facilities services company uniquely positioned with the capacity and capability to significantly reduce waste across its operations.

Recognised by RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Yearbook as the global sustainability leader in its market sector, Sodexo is driven by its ambitions Better Tomorrow 2025 commitments with a special focus on hunger, gender and waste.

Sodexo is leading the way in waste reduction by using innovation in delivering service solutions for clients that minimise waste generation, improve resource use, and maximise cost efficiencies. This includes leveraging its vast network of suppliers, implementing waste measurement and feedback systems, as well as encouraging positive change in consumer behaviour to recycle and reduce post-consumer waste.

In an upstream effort to reduce waste, Sodexo in Australia has recently partnered with online surplus wholesale food marketplace, Yume, which connects commercial suppliers with buyers to facilitate the sale of high quality surplus food on a large scale. Through its energy and resources business alone, Sodexo has saved 13,700 kg of quality surplus food, equating to 945,300 litres of water saved and 27 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the environment.

wastelessWith its foodservice operations, Sodexo has established a global food waste tracking program, WasteWatch, a data-driven system which helps identify causes and define action plans to prevent pre and post-consumer waste. Sites implementing WasteWatch can reduce food waste by 4 per cent within two to six months.

So far, Sodexo sites have embraced the culture of sustainability; 89.7 per cent of Sodexo sites have implemented equipment and processes to reduce organic waste and 81.5 per cent of Sodexo sites have done the same for non-organic waste.

By utilising integrated services leveraging on industry expertise, Sodexo not only supports organisational performance in the day-to-day operations of a business, but most importantly its long term sustainability.
