After having a meaningful conversation with her children, Wendy Jones found herself at a crossroads. She was feeling unsure about the next steps in her career after two decades in the horticulture industry. Intrigued by the promised flexibility and diverse opportunities of FIFO work, Wendy enthusiastically embraced this new path.

She is now working as a catering service attendant at West Pilbara Village and proudly embraces her Whadjuk Aboriginal and Scottish heritage.

"I've had an amazing journey at Sodexo. Embracing this experience has been so rewarding. Although it seemed tough initially, every challenge has helped me grow personally and professionally. Every moment since I took that leap has been fulfilling and reaffirmed the value of courage in pursuing my dreams." Wendy reflects on her nearly 16 years with Sodexo, expressing gratitude for witnessing remarkable and transformative organisational changes.

Work-Life Balance

"Whenever I return to my room after my shift, I connect with my grandkids and family over the phone. I shower, change into my jammies and make myself a cup of tea – it’s the best way to end your shift," she said. She added, "Maintaining work and personal life balance is crucial for me."

"Being away from your loved ones in FIFO can be challenging. Taking time away from work is essential for everyone, even new employees. It's important to teach them how to prioritise safety and self-care,” she emphasises. "This also makes the time spent at home all the more precious and valuable."

Wendy has taken the initiative to mentor and support younger staff, assuming a nurturing role in the workplace. "We foster a culture of respect and open communication on site. Everyone takes turns speaking and listening, promoting mutual understanding."

The Safety of Our People

Wendy continues to raise awareness about safety to ensure her colleagues feel safe at work. "I think openness and promotion of safety is key to ensure we get home safely," she said.  

"It's about understanding your team and how different people develop, as well as the support they need to make them thrive. I am always looking for opportunities to nurture my team and gain their respect, which will positively impact the workplace dynamic.” 

When asked for advice from colleagues, Wendy suggested that they "get amongst their team, understand the individuals, and use their experiences and skills to guide them in different ways."  

While personal growth is essential to Wendy, the growth of her team takes priority. "By focussing on safety and supporting my team in achieving this, we all have the opportunity to do and be better," Wendy said. 

Fulfillment Within

Wendy encourages a sense of family unity within her team, emphasising that the inclusive atmosphere of the Sodexo kitchen provides an ideal setting for sharing knowledge and personal development, which is important in her culture.

When questioned about her role's highlight, Wendy enthusiastically shared, "I love seeing the end result when we open for service. Experiencing the sense of accomplishment and seeing our dedicated efforts materialise brings me immense joy."

"At West Pilbara Village, our devoted team has been together since the reopening of the village in 2020, building strong connections. The stunning surroundings offer breathtaking mountain views, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and abundant nature. It’s truly an extraordinary location. Reflecting on it, every moment has been worthwhile," she expressed.

Wendy's wealth of experience includes working at 27 different sites during her Sodexo career. She is thankful for the amazing people she has met at Sodexo and the amazing support received from the leaders along the way and is excitedly anticipating the next adventure in her journey.
