Ben Stewart's success as a Facilities Maintenance Manager at Sodexo is not just about his achievements but also his unwavering commitment to personal development and his ability to empower others. Ben’s dedication to continuous learning and belief in empowering others to thrive in their unique ways, just as he has, are testaments to the values upheld at Sodexo.

Ben-Stewart-in-sodexo-office.jpgSince 2013, Ben has been an integral part of the Sodexo team, starting as a plumber and now excelling in his new role since March 2023. His transition showcases his adaptability and commitment to success. As a young adult, Ben envisioned a future in plumbing and hands-on work. Little did he know that he would end up managing the largest facilities maintenance portfolio in the Pilbara with nearly 400 people in his team, handling 100,000 preventative work orders and overseeing 1.5 million in assets.

Questions to Answers

Working to support his team, Ben is aware of his limits and recognises when he needs to ask for support to ensure the task is completed to the highest standard. He regards times like this as an opportunity to learn and expand his skillset.

"I've met many great people and mentors along the way who have moulded me into the person I am today. Sodexo has great people and supportive leaders who you can connect with and help you when you have a question - that's what got me through when I got stuck," Ben said.

"When I first started, I remember asking millions of questions. I thought my questions were stupid, but now I reflect, 'no question is silly'. I challenged myself to speak up and get involved as much as possible", he said.

"I also want to ensure my fellow Sodexo colleagues are empowered to do the same."

"Don't hesitate to ask questions and seek feedback. Actively participate to expand your knowledge. Getting the answers and information we need is crucial," he emphasised.

A Culture of Safety

One aspect of working with Sodexo that Ben appreciates is the value that is placed on safety.

"I had never worked FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out) before, and I was taken aback by how seriously everyone takes their safety," Ben said.

"After 12 years with Sodexo, I believe safety culture is the most important thing; if someone sees something, they will say something."

"We prioritise a zero-harm mindset, engage with and educate our teams, equip them with the necessary tools, monitor on-site activities, and reflect on the entire process."

"As a leader, we want to ensure everyone goes home safe," Ben said.

"You see it across all trades. We help each other while ensuring that everyone is being looked after; we don't want to see anyone getting hurt." It is crucial to ensure the wellbeing of everyone involved and to prevent any injuries. One of Ben's supervised sites, Paraburdoo, has recently recorded over 1000 days without any Lost Time Injuries (LTI). This accomplishment demonstrates the commitment to safety at the site and reflects the collective effort to maintain a secure working environment.

Authentic Self

In Ben's view, success boils down to staying true to yourself. It involves being honest about your aspirations in life and work and actively working towards them.

"You will meet situations where you feel stuck and lost, which is okay. Take a step back and reset. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask questions whenever you are unsure," Ben said.

“At Sodexo, people have access to a wide range of opportunities that extend beyond traditional career paths. These opportunities encompass skill-building programs, mentorship initiatives, and professional development courses, providing diverse avenues for personal and career growth.”

“Sodexo also values authenticity and encourages employees to bring their authentic selves to work, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.”
